  • Co Sponsor Anniversary Reenactment and Living History event which featured a re-creation of a portion of the Battle of South Mountain, period medical cures, military camp life, and the daily activities of the civilians of a small town of the Civil War period.

new office for the operation of the battlefield will be at Washington Monument State Park.  This location offers several things that make it a logical choice.  It is located near, but not on, the battlefield itself.  Only a mile north of Turner's Gap, it will be easy to set out traffic signs directing people to the office there.  It already has enough office space for the battlefield staff, and includes it's own shop area with tools and work bays to allow the staff to take care of any maintenance needs.  There is also adequate storage space for vehicles and equipment so everything will be close at hand.  The office there has been underutilized for many years, and this will help breathe new life into that facility.

The Blue-Grey Education Society has agreed to sponsor 17 interpretive markers for the battlefield.  The first gap to receive these markers will be Crampton's, due to the relative stable situation with the land in that area.  This will likely turn out to be a three-year project, each year focusing on a different gap.  The group would like to have the signs ready for next September for a big dedication ceremony on the 14th, which is a Saturday next year.  The signs are likely to cost around $1,800 each and the group already has 13 of the 17 signs sponsored!  The bad news is that the battlefield will need to

lessly produced and participated in both the Living History and Engagement of Burkittsville and to those extending the abundant town hospitality during the exquisite re-enactment event of September 8th and 9th.

December's newsletter is a fitting opportunity to focus on the defining first year of activities, organizational purpose, non-military endeavors, and Civil War related aspects of the The Friends of South Mountain State Battlefield.

We have achieved real and meaningful progress by laying a solid organizational foundation, defining our priorities and establishing the physical and social context of the association.

Mindful of our stewardship goals to support Maryland's efforts to protect preserve and interpret the cultural historical, and Civil War heritage of South Mountain.  We have made four accomplishments of particular note:
