lery and the life of the soldier. Cannon firing at 11 am and 2 pm on Sat. and 11 am on Sun. This will be a wonderful adjunct to the Engagement at Burkittsville (see write up) and a chance to get "up close and personal" with the historians.
Saturday and Sunday Sept 8th and 9th. Engagement at Burkittsville - The Friends of South Mountain State Battlefield and The South Mountain Heritage Society are sponsoring this two day event. Be part of an authentic recreation of the sights, sounds, and smells of life during the American Civil War, at Burkittsville, Maryland. Featured will be a recreation of a portion of the Battle of South Mountain, period medical care, camp life, and the daily activities of the citizens in a small town of the period.
Activities are from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, with torch light tours of the town and camps starting at 8pm. On Sunday, activities will run from 9am to 2pm. Parking is $10 per car of five persons, $15 for six or more. Price includes torch light tour on Saturday evening. Bus groups are asked to please call in advance.

Lighting the Arch… we are putting out bids on this project and hope to have the lighting installed by October, which will be the 105th Anniversary of the dedication of the Arch.
New vending machines were recently installed by Coca Cola Co. which will hold the 20oz plastic bottles rather then the cans. Member Kingsley Clark, who stocks the machines, said business has been brisk with the changeover. Visitors can take the light weight bottles on the trail when hiking.
Art Raffle- enclosed are raffle tickets for this year's art raffle. The print is Burnside's Bridge by John Paul Strain. It is beautifully matted and framed by Antietam Gallery. The drawing will be made at Gapland Hall when we celebrate Museums by Candlelight on December 8th. Ticket stubs can be returned to FSMSB, PO Box 192, Burkittsville MD 21718 or at the museum. Museum Expands Hours… Member Charles Wierer, who retired in the beginning of 2001, has been hired by South Mountain Recreation Area as a Seasonal Ranger and will be the docent in the museum Wed. through Sun. from 9-5:30, until the museum closes for the season on the last weekend of October. We are now able to serve many more visitors and the small gift shop we have established is thriving. On weekends there are usually two docents present to accommodate the increased number of visitors.
Christmas in July… that's what this month has been like. FSMSB has received generous donations from the Maryland Mountain Club, the Model Boat Club of Baltimore, the Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Friends of Washington Monument. The Friends of Washington

Saturday, August 18th. The Second "After the Battle" Candlelight Tour of the Crampton's Gap. Tours will leave every 15 minutes from 7:30 to 10 p.m. After an introduction to the battle by Ranger Al Preston, tour guides will lead visitors to the 6 different scenarios depicting scenes on the mountain on the evening of the battle. Chuck Wierer will be at the Arch to interpret the symbolism. Across the road, Colleen Clark from Antietam will entertain guests with Civil War music and songs, Chuck Nicholson and Matt Piston will tell about the life of a drummer boy and fife and in the Lodge civilian reenactors Laura Harding, Kathleen Musser and Bev Heath will portray ladies from Burkittsville and explain how the battle affected them. The museum will be open and the Friends will be selling beverages. A $2 admission fee will apply for those over 13. Please attend, support our program, and have a delightful and informative evening.

And the winner is……in the last issue of the Arch, we opened a contest to rename the newsletter. There was only one entry, but it was a great one! John LaRosch, our only Delaware member, suggested The Dispatch. It is a nice tie in with the Battle of South Mountain and correspondent George Alfred Townsend.
